Mark Martin, Black Warrior Riverkeeper's chief prosecuting attorney, addressed the Birmingham Canoe Club at the Homewood Public Library, about the excessive amounts of chicken factories in the headwaters of the Black Warrior watershed, and these Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) impact on water quality and human health.

Aerial photography of Roebuck Springs, headwaters of Village Creek and habitat of the Watercress Darter (Etheostoma nuchale), a federally protected endangered species.

    July 15, 2003 - Birmingham Sierra Club

Roger Conville spoke to the Birmingham Chapter of the Sierra Club about Black Warrior Riverkeeper, at the Birmingham Zoo.  Conville's speech covered everything from Hudson Riverkeeper's origins to the creation and accomplishments of Black Warrior Riverkeeper and other Waterkeepers throughout America and the world.  David Tidwell, President of Black Warrior Riverkeeper, gave the introductory speech.

    July 13, 2003 - Chicken CAFO conference ~ Ashville, Alabama

Black Warrior Riverkeeper conference addressing the excessive amounts of Chicken operations located in the headwaters of the Black Warrior watershed, particularly in Blount and Cullman Counties.

    June 24, 2003 - Watercress Darter, Roebuck Springs, AL.

Black Warrior Riverkeeper in cooperation with Dr. Styles, Dr. Howell, and Arthur Crenshaw, videotaped the first ever live footage of the Watercress Darter (Etheostoma nuchale) endemic to our Black Warrior.

    June 18-22, 2003 - Fifth Annual Waterkeeper Alliance Conference, 

(Toronto, Ontario)

A conference for the 100+ Waterkeeper Programs to allow new Keepers to learn from more experienced members of the Alliance, enable all Keepers to exchange successful advocacy tools, build a greater sense of Waterkeeper “culture” and reinforce the regional governance structure of the Alliance.  David Whiteside attended as the representative of Black Warrior Riverkeeper.

    June 10, 2003 - Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. ~ Tuscaloosa, AL.

Toured Hurricane Creek with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.  Recorded 60 second Public Service Announcement on Hurricane Creek.  Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. speech at University of Alabama.  Speech commemorated 40th anniversary of the desegregation of the University.

Toured Valley Creek with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.  Recorded 30 second Public Service Announcement on Valley Creek.  Black Warrior Riverkeeper fundraiser at 2:00 pm at Birmingham Southern, $25.  Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. speech at Birmingham-Southern. Free admission.

 

    March 5, 2003 - Okaaba Film Works

Fundraising Party for Village Creek Documentary. Two bands live at ZYDECO's  5:30 - 9:30 pm

 

    February, 2003 - Red Rain

During the month of February, Red Rain in Homewood will donate 5% of all sales to Black Warrior Riverkeeper, Cahaba River Society, Alabama Environmental Commission, Ruffner Mountain Nature Center and Alabama Rivers Alliance.  Red Rain is located at 2803 18th Street South, in downtown Homewood, Alabama.
