    December 10, 2005 - TUSCALOOSA CHRISTMAS AFLOAT

The extravagant annual holiday boat parade on our Black Warrior River in Tuscaloosa.

Location:  Tuscaloosa Alabama -- Call any of the numbers below for more information.

Details:  The annual holiday boat parade on the Black Warrior River in Tuscaloosa is put on by The Pirates of the Warrior Boating Club which has 200 members.  The purpose of the organization is to promote and perform community service in Tuscaloosa County, focusing on the river and surrounding areas, including river and road clean-ups.  Fundraisers, including Charity Runs on the water and motorcycle rides, are held throughout the year to financially assist The Pirates in supporting Tuscaloosa Christmas Afloat.  DON'T MISS IT !!!

    December 8, 2005 - Tarrant Aquaduct Trail Deed Signing

Location:  Tarrant City Hall  --  1604 Pinson Valley Parkway, Tarrant  --  Thursday, December 8th, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Details:  In recognition of the Birmingham Water Works Board’s contribution to the Five Mile Creek Greenway, please plan to attend this deed-signing of the property for the Tarrant Aquaduct Trail.  Originally the canal which provided early Birmingham its source of drinking water, this acquisition is a tremendous asset for the all the communities benefiting from the Five Mile Creek Greenway.

    December 3, 2005 - Five Mile Creek Greenway volunteers needed in Fultondale

Location: Fultondale City Hall  --  Saturday, December 3rd meet at 8:30 am.

Details: On Saturday, December 3rd, the City of Fultondale needs volunteers to help clear brush and invasive species from around the beehive coke ovens that Fultondale plans to turn into a Five Mile Creek Greenway park and trail.  We plan to meet at Fultondale City Hall at 8:30am (driving directions below) and work until 1:00 or so.  There will be a few volunteers there from Samford University, but we could use a group of around 15 volunteers that morning.

Directions to Fultondale City Hall (from Birmingham)

1)      Take I-65 North towards Huntsville
2)      Take Exit 267 – Walkers Chapel Road
3)      Turn right off the exit ramp.
4)      Go straight through TWO traffic signals and ONE emergency signal.
5)      City Hall is on your right, turn into the lot and park in front.  We’ll meet at the main entrance.

 

    December 3, 2005 - Roland M. Harper symposium

Location: There will be a symposium on Roland M. Harper on Saturday, December 3rd from 9am - 3pm at Smith Hall on the University of Alabama campus.

Details: Roland M. Harper was a naturalist and explorer who searched out and catalogued rare and interesting plants along the Black Warrior River near Tuscaloosa starting in the early 1900s. His work is admired by many, including renowned photographer Beth Maynor Young and botanists Richard & Nancy Cobb.  Richard Cobb will be giving several presentations and Beth Maynor Young will be showing some of her pictures.  Cobb and Young have been working together to retrace Harper's footsteps some 100 years later.

    November 26, 2005 - WildSouth Hike in Bankhead National Forest

Location: Meet at the Warrior Mountains Trading Company in Wren, Alabama * at 9:00 a.m. on November 26.  We will return to Wren mid-afternoon.

*Directions to Wren: We are located at the intersection of highways 33 and 36, 2 miles south of Moulton.  The Warrior Mountains Trading Company is on the northeast corner of the intersection.  Street address:  11312 AL Hwy 33, Moulton , AL

Details: Sougahoagee Falls in the Bankhead National Forest .  This month's hike will be led by Janice. Wear comfortable hiking boots or sneakers with good tread.  Expect slippery rocks and creek crossings, so appropriate footwear is important!  Watch for the need for packing rain gear and layer your clothing for warmth and comfort.

Details: The Alabama Museum of Natural History is celebrating 20 years of production of the Discovering Alabama television series and natural history programs.  We would like to honor our friends, viewers and contributors by inviting them to a special celebration to be held on Sunday, November 13, from 2 to 4 pm in the Grand Gallery of Smith Hall on the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa. "State of the Lake Address"

Details: Dr. Bill Deutsch and Eric Reutebuch of Alabama Water Watch will be the speakers once again for the Smith Lake Environmental Preservation Committee’s Annual Meeting and State of the Lake Address. The Annual Meeting has been scheduled for November 12, 2005 at 9 AM at the Brushy Pond Restaurant. They will be reviewing the data collected by the citizen volunteer monitors and ADEM and he will be presenting the new 2005 Smith Lake Water Quality Report that our group along with others funded and compiled for your information. The last report was printed in 1999 and you will see how the water has changed over time.

    October 3, 2005 - John Latecki, Jr.

Come meet John at Howton's Camp where the Mulberry Fork & Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River meet on 

Monday, October 3, 2005 shortly after 10:00 am.

This will be the culmination of John Latecki Jr.'s paddle up the Black Warrior from Demopolis, a 168 mile trip.  He will then head straight to the Moundville Native American Festival and back down to Demopolis, making this a 336 mile round trip.  He is paddling 30,000 miles around the U.S. to raise money and awareness to fight multiple sclerosis.  For more info: http://www.fightingms.org/

- go a ways until you start going downhill, and look for the Howton's Camp sign and Pine Ridge Road on the right.

- go past the first boat landing on the left; park near cafe on the water.

You are now on a spit of land where the Mulberry Fork & Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River meet.

Black Warrior RIVERKEEPER'S major fundraiser of 2006 took place at the University of Vermont's Ira Allen Chapel on April 3, 2005.  The event featured a reception and speeches by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Jon Fishman of Phish, and Black Warrior Riverkeeper founder, David Whiteside.  The event was emceed by legendary comedian Robert Klein.  Longtime members, Laurie and Larry David were the generous underwriters.  This event was organized by David Whiteside and raised significant funds towards Black Warrior Riverkeeper's 2005 operating budget.
