    December 16, 2006 - Bucks Pocket Day Hike

Location: Meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Highway 79 parking lot next to the Exxon Service Station at intersection with AL 151 in Pinson.

Details: Dayhike at Bucks Pocket State Park.  This is an easy stroll on trails in this very scenic park, starting at the overlook and walking down to the canyon floor, crossing South Sauty Creek and heading upstream beside the creek.

    November 11, 2006 - Lake Lurleen Canoe Trip

Location: Meet 1:00 p.m. at the Days Inn Hoover parking lot.

Details: Canoe around the perimeter of a very beautiful tree-lined lake in this forested state park located near the city of Tuscaloosa , Alabama.  You may bring your own canoe or kayak or you may rent aluminum canoes at the park for just $15 per boat.

    October 21, 2006 - Capsey Creek hike - Bankhead Nat'l Forest 

Location: Meet 8:00 a.m. at the Kmart Green Springs.

Details: The trip is rated moderately strenuous because there are several ups and downs, most of the hike is off trail, and participants will be required to cross Capsey Creek by rock-hopping ten or more times. Bring a picnic lunch and water.

Details: We will hike along the Sipsey Fork, one of Alabama ’s most beautiful rivers, and then up along Borden Creek to our camping area.  The hike with packs from the parking area to the campsite is about 1.3 miles one way, so you won’t have a long walk with your camping gear.

Location: Brushy Lake Campground - Bankhead National Forest -- Saturday, September 30th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

*Directions to Brushy Lake:

From Double Springs, take Hwy. 33 north 15 miles to the Pine Torch sign and turn right.  Follow the paved road and turn left at the Brushy Lake sign.

From Moulton, take Hwy. 33 south 9 miles to the Pine Torch sign and turn left.  Follow the paved road and turn left at the sign pointing to Brushy Lake .

 

Details: Archaeology Festival programs and exhibits will be family oriented and include stone arrowhead manufacture (flint knapping) and making prehistoric pottery, as well as, stone carving, blowgun and spear thrower demonstrations.

Details: Clothing layered for temperature control works best. Wear comfortable hiking boots or sneakers with good tread.  Appropriate footwear is important!  Watch for the need for packing rain gear.  Insect repellent for ticks will come in handy.  Remember your EpiPen if you have serious allergic reactions to stings or bites.

    September 2, 2006 - Locust Fork River Float

Location: Locust Fork from Swann Covered Bridge to Powell Falls near Cleveland, Alabama

Details: Float in the river from Swann Covered Bridge to Powell Falls.  We’ll view and then drive through a genuine, old wooden covered bridge.  Then we’ll float under the bridge and further, about a mile and a half, downstream to Powell Falls.  We’ll also view the sheer cliffs that rise about 60 feet above the river.  So enjoy a flowing river, covered bridge, high rock bluffs and two waterfalls—all along a one mile stretch of this river.  Bring a picnic lunch, drink, sunscreen and something to float on such as an inflatable vinyl float or air mattress.  Fabric-covered, inflatable, vinyl, rectangular floats like you use to ride the waves at the Gulf work best.  Pack your lunch, sunscreen, towel and drink in 2 plastic garbage bags with twist ties, one bag over the other.  Lunch will be on the huge flat rock in the middle of the river by two waterfalls.

Details: The Smith Lake Environmental Preservation Committee is hosting this special meeting with Alabama Power so that folks can get current and accurate information about issues of concern around Smith Lake .

Directions: I-65 to exit 299, turn west on Hwy. 69.  After 5 or 6 miles, turn right on Co. Rd. 109. After 5 or 6 miles, take a right at the 4 way stop onto Co. Rd. 222. Proceed about 2 miles and the Brushy Pond Restaurant will be on your left. If you are coming from the west, you can also access Co. Rd. 222 by taking a left on Co. Rd. 222 in Bremen.

    August 26, 2006 - Bankhead National Forest Hike (Collier Creek)

Location: Collier Creek, Bankhead National Forest

Details:  Collier Creek is one of the prettiest creeks in the Bankhead Forest .  There was even a special magazine article about its beauty!  Please bring your river shoes, swimsuit and towel along with your picnic lunch and drinking water.  Enjoy an adventure.  Bring a friend.  Well-behaved, properly supervised children age 9 and over welcome.  Optional dinner after.  Hot showers available before dinner.  Please bring your shower things and change of clothes if you wish. Meet 8:45 a.m. at the Mile 300 I-65 Rest Area.

Directions to Mile 300 I-65 Rest Area: On I-65 north between mile markers 300 and 301, 39 miles north of I-65 junction with I-59/I-20 in downtown Birmingham and eight miles south of the U.S. Highway 278 exit number 308 (the middle Cullman exit) on I-65.  Restrooms available at the rest area.  The time it will take you to get to the rest area is the time it takes you to drive from where you start to the junction of I-65 and I-59/I-20 plus 40 minutes.  Thus, for example, if you live in Homewood and it takes 15 minutes to drive to malfunction junction, you need to allow 55 minutes to drive to the Mile 300 I-65 Rest Area from your home.

    August 19, 2006 - 2nd Annual Holt Lake Community Cleanup

Location: Registration begins at 8am at Rocky Branch Park in Peterson.

Details: Volunteers will clean up sloughs and the shoreline of litter and debris from Holt Lake with a hot dog lunch provided at 12pm.
  Holt Lake , part of the Black Warrior River System, provides valuable water resources and many recreational opportunities for the region.  This cleanup helps ensure a safe, beautiful, recreational environment for the surrounding communities.

    June 3, 2006 - Bankhead Lake Community Cleanup

Location: Buddy Vines Camp -- Sat. June 3, 2006 -- 8:00am - noon.

Details: The community cleanup will be Saturday, June 3 from 8 a.m. to noon at Buddy Vines Camp. A picnic lunch will be held immediately following the cleanup.  If there is an area of the Black Warrior River that needs to be cleaned up, it's Bankhead Lake.  This part of the river receives trash from all of Birmingham's communities and from roadsides throughout West Jefferson County.  Such a vital cleanup needs your participation!  You'll be surprised by what gets pulled out of the river and by how beautiful this area is.

Take I-59 West. 
Take the 20th Street exit and continue through Ensley onto Highway 269. 
Follow this road for 15 miles.  It will turn into Birmingport Road. 
Just past the 15 mile marker, turn left onto Short Creek Road at intersection with BP gas station. 
At t-intersection, turn left onto Alliance Road. 
Go 1.2 miles to the top of the third hill and turn right onto Buddy Vines Camp Road. 
This road will take you 2.7 miles to the camp.

Details:  Riverkeeper volunteer Jennifer Taylor, has organized cleanups for National River Cleanup week, with Black Warrior Riverkeeper as a primary sponsor.  Jennifer and Riverkeeper will be cleaning up an illegal used tire dump on the shore of the Mulberry along the shore and County Road 509 starting at 9:00 a.m. and then paddling the Mulberry Fork, cleaning along the way.  Meet at old 31 bridge put-in.

Details:  In order to showcase the scenic and natural beauty of Five Mile Creek, the Five Mile Creek Greenway Partnership would like to invite elected officials from Jefferson County and municipalities in the Five Mile Creek Watershed on a guided canoe float on Five Mile Creek near Graysville.  We also welcome any stakeholders and area residents who would like to come learn about the current challenges facing this valuable natural resource.

Details: Starting at 8:00 am and ending early afternoon, everyone will then move to University of Alabama's campus for their Earth Day event.

    April 22, 2006 - Jefferson County Household Hazardous Waste Day

Location: Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, Bessemer Civic Center, Center Point Courthouse, and the Alabama State Fairgrounds. 

Details: This event is open to all Jefferson County residents at no charge.  Household Hazardous Waste is waste routinely found in the home that can catch fire, react, or explode under certain circumstances, or that may be corrosive or toxic. Some of the more common varieties include certain kinds of paints, paint thinners, car batteries, pesticides or herbicides, unusable gasoline or kerosene contaminated with water, and used motor oil, to name just a few. As you might suspect, most basements and storage sheds boast an ample amount of these products which can not be introduced into the traditional waste stream.

Location:  Huffman/Roebuck Area, Birmingham Volunteer registration at the HQ parking lot on Roebuck Parkway (Hwy 75)

Details:  The third annual Five Mile Creek Greenway Partnership volunteer cleanup along Five Mile Creek, volunteers will be helping to complete work on an outdoor classroom and constructed wetland behind Huffman High School, in addition to the creek cleanup.  Volunteers will receive a free hot dog lunch and T-shirt.
